Level 4.8 Complaining Adjectives

Angela : Hi, Lauren. How was your holiday?

Lauren : It was terrible!

Angela : What’s wrong?

Lauren : The hotel was too bad. It wasn’t good enough.

Angela : What about the bedroom?

Lauren : The bedroom wasn’t big enough. It was too small for me and my sister.

Angela : I bet it wasn’t uncomfortable.

Lauren : Yeah… And the restaurant…

Angela : What’s the matter?

Lauren : The waiters and waitresses weren’t friendly enough.

Angela : How about the food.

Lauren : The food was tasteless and too expensive!

Angela : What a holiday!

Lauren : Yes, I didn’t enjoy it at all!

Basically, we can use adjective to complain about something by using these patterns:


Past form:


The (noun (uncountable or singular countable)) + was + too + adjective.
The (noun (uncountable or singular countable)) + wasn't + opposite adjective + enough.

The (noun (plural countable)) + were + too + adjective.
The (noun ((plural countable)) + weren't + opposite adjective + enough.

Present form:














The (noun (uncountable or singular countable)) + is + too + adjective.
The (noun (uncountable or singular countable)) + isn't + opposite adjective + enough.

The (noun (plural countable)) + are + too + adjective.
The (noun ((plural countable)) + aren't + opposite adjective + enough.

Sam     : Are you older than your brother?

Bob      : No, I’m not. I’m younger than my brother.

Sam     : Do you have larger feet than your brother?

Bob      : Yes, I do. I have larger feet than my brother.

Sam     : Is your hair longer than your brother’s?

Bob      : Yes, it is. My hair’s longer than my brother’s hair.

Sam     : Is your journey to school longer than your brother’s?

Bob      : No, it isn’t. My journey to school is shorter than my brother’s.

Sam     : Do you have a faster 100 m time than your brother?

Bob      : Unfortunately no. My brother has a faster 100 m time.

Sam     : Do you get up earlier than your brother?

Level 4.4 Comparative and Superlative Adjectives

One-syllable adjectives	old wise	COMPARATIVE older wiser	SUPERLATIVE the oldest the wisest	For more one-syllable adjectives, -er and -est are added.

Irregular adjectives	good bad	better worse	the best the worst	Good and bad have irregular comparative and superlative forms.
Both farther and further are used to compare physical distances: I walked farther/further than my friend did. Further (but not farther) can also mean “additional”: I need further information.
