Happy Earth Day, Let's Save Our Planet (Step 7 - 12)

Written By Heni Puspita on Friday, April 22, 2011 | 8:02 AM

Step 7. Use alternative

WALK OR BIKE. These are healthy alternatives to driving, especially for trips under two kilometers.

CAR POOL. Going in the same direction as your neighbors and friends? Try sharing a car rather than taking 2 or 3 vehicles.

TRY THE BUSWAY. Speedy and efficient, the Busway offers a great environmentally friendly alternative to a petrol guzzling car.

Step 8. Watch what you eat

BUY LOCALLY. Take a trip to your local traditional market. To help reduce CO2 emissions (released from trucks, airplanes, and cargo ships), it’s best to buy food that’s in season, and grown locally.

BUY ORGANIC. Organic foods are grown without pesticides and chemical fertilizers - a healthier option not only for you, but also for the planet.

Step 9. Recycle and buy recycled

BUY RECYCLED PRODUCTS. You will save virgin materials, conserve energy, and reduce landfill waste. Recycled paper products include toilet paper, copy paper, paper towel, and tissues. Look for garbage bags and bin liners labeled “recycled plastic”, and buy recycled toner cartridge for your fax machine and printers.

RECYCLE as much as you can. Separate your rubbish and make it easier for the collector.

Step 10. Protect the ocean

EAT SUSTAINABLE FISH. Eat fish produced in regulated fisheries.

PROTECT ENDANGERED SPECIES. Avoid products made from mother of pearl, other sea shells, turtle shells or shark’s teeth. Don’t eat shark fin soup! Don’t support nations that encourage whaling.

REMEMBER. The healthy of our oceans reflect the health of our planet.

Step 11. Use paper wisely

PRINT DOUBLE-SIDED. Businesses throw away millions of tons of paper every year. Set your printer’s default option to print double-sided (duplex printing).

RESEND IT. Envelopes come in huge quantities for free everyday. If you are careful when opening letters, you can use the envelopes again by simply putting a label over the original address.

USE TECHNOLOGY. Take advantage of technology available and send e-mails instead of letters and memos, pay bills online and ask for electronic bank statements and e-tickets.

Step 12. Share this information

GOSSIP about how to save the planet over a delicious beverage at your favorite coffee lounge.

E-MAIL it to a friend or even better a group of friends.

SMS. Utilize your trendy cell phone to messenger it to a friend.

TEACH your children, it’s their legacy after all.

HAPPY EARTH DAY!!!

Happy Earth Day, Let's Save Our Planet (Step 1 - 6)

Global warming is the greatest threat humankind has ever faced. In fact, the problem is so serious that it’s difficult to believe that an individual person can have an effect and make a change. But the amazing fact is that each person CAN make a difference. Remember… if each of us makes a tiny step it’s a great leap for the planet. So this year, let’s al make a difference by doing what we can do to stop global warming. Let’s go green!

Step 1. Get gardening

PLANT A TREE. If 5% of the Indonesian population planted a tree, it would mean 10 million more trees absorbing carbon from the atmosphere.

GROW A GARDEN. Change that small area at the back of your house into a carbon absorbing paradise.

Step 2. Use biodegradable cleaning products

CHECK LABELS of household cleaners you use to see whether they are environmentally friendly.

CONSIDER ALTERNATIVES like baking soda, scouring pads, water or little more elbow grease.

Step 3. Reduce waste

BUY REUSABLE PRODUCTS. Avoid disposable products like razors, disposable cameras.

DOWNLOAD SOFTWARE. Billions of compact disc and their packaging are sold annually. That’s a lot of waste!

Step 4. Conserve electricity

SWITCH BULBS from traditional incandescent light bulbs to compact fluorescent light bulbs (C.F.L.). If every Indonesian household replaced a regular light bulb with a C.F.L., the pollution reduction would be equivalent to removing one million cars from the road.

TURN OFF CHARGERS. Most cell-phone chargers continue to draw electricity even when the phone isn’t plugged into it.

SWITCH OFF unneeded lights even when leaving a room for a short time.

Step 5. Reduce air pollution

CHANGE TO SOLAR. Use solar power for water heating. In one day, the sun provides more energy than our population could use in 27 years.

SERVICE YOUR CAR regularly.

USE WATER BASED paint products.

Step 6. Save water

TURN OFF TAPS. If you leave water running while you brush your teeth, you waste 1,800 gallons a year!

STOP LEAKS. Fixing leaky taps and toilets is a quick and easy way to conserve water. A tap drip can waste 20 gallons of water a day. Leaky toilets waste nearly 100 gallons a day.

R.A. Kartini - The Rise of Indonesian Women

Written By Heni Puspita on Thursday, April 21, 2011 | 1:06 PM

Raden Adjeng Kartini (born in Jepara, Central Java, April 21, 1879 - died in Rembang, Central Java, September 17, 1904 at the age of 25) or more accurately called Raden Ayu Kartini was a prominent Javanese and Indonesian National Hero. Kartini is known as a pioneer of the rise of Indonesian women.

Raden Adjeng Kartini was one of the Javanese aristocrats or nobles, the daughter of Raden Mas Adipati Ario Sosroningrat, the regent of Jepara.

Until the age of 12, Kartini was allowed to attend school in ELS (Europese Lagere School). Here, Kartini learn the Dutch language. But when she was 12 years old, she had to stop attending the school and stay at home.

Since Kartini could speak Dutch, at home she began to study by herself and write letters to her friends pen pal from Netherlands. One of them was Rosa Abendanon who supported her a lot. Through European books, newspapers, and magazines, Kartini was interested in the advancement of European women's thoughts. Her desire to help forward Indonesian women was arise seeing that the native women were at the low social status.

Kartini read Semarang newspaper 'De Locomotief' - managed by Pieter Brooshooft - a lot. She was also received leestrommel (package of magazines circulated by bookstore to the subscribers). Among them, there were magazines of culture and science, and also Dutch women's magazine De Hollandsche Lelie. Kartini then sent her writings for several times and those writings were published in De Hollandsche Lelie. Kartini was someone who read with great attention.

Her attention wasn't solely about women's emancipation, but also about general social problems. Kartini saw that women struggled to gain freedom, autonomy and legal equality as a part of broader movement.

Among the books Kartini read before the age of 20 were Max Havelaar and Surat-Surat Cinta (Love Letters) by Multatuli which she read twice before November 1901. Then, there was De Stille Kraacht (literally means Power of Invisibility) by Loius Coperus. There were a roman-feminist book by Mrs. Goekoop de-Jong Van Beek and an anti-war novel written by Berta von Suttner, Die Waffer Nieder (literally means Put the Weapons).

Kartini married the regent of Rembang, K.R.M. Ario Singgih Djojo Adhiningrat on November 12, 1903. Her husband understood Kartini's desire to help native women. He gave her the freedom to establish a school for women in the east gate of Rembang disrtict office complex. Kartini's first and the last child, R.M. Soesalit was born on September 13, 1904. A few days later, September 17, 1904, Kartini died at the age of 25. Kartini was buried in Bulu, Rembang.

Kartini School

Thanks to her determination, a school for women 'Sekolah Wanita' by Kartini Foundation was established in Semarang in 1912, and later in Surabaya, Yogyakarta, Malang, Madiun, Cirebon, and other areas. Kartini Foundation was founded by Van Deventer, a figure of the Ethical Policy.

After Kartini passed away, Mr. J.H. Abendanon collected and recorded the letters R.A. Kartini sent to her friends in Europe. Abendanon at that time was the Minister of Culture, Religion, and Crafts of Dutch East Indies. The book was entitled Dood Duisternis tot Licht (Out of Dark Comes Light).

On May 2, 1964, President Sukarno issued a Presidential Decree which established R.A. Kartini as National Hero and set her birthday, April 21, to be commemorated each year as Kartini Day.

North America

Written By Heni Puspita on Tuesday, April 19, 2011 | 11:30 AM

In a Geography class, the teacher asked George to come in front of the class. She said, “George, go to the map and find North America.”

George came forward and pointed at a place on the map, “Here it is!”

The teacher remarked, “Correct, George!” Then she asked the rest of the class, “Now, class, who discovered America?”

The whole class shouted, “George!”

After I Leave the Office...

Written By Heni Puspita on Monday, April 18, 2011 | 8:56 PM

Sometimes I buy some foods (mostly snacks) and eat them together with my family. Here are some places that I frequently visit to buy some foods.

Pempek

I love pempek and I use to go to this stall to buy some. The price is affordable, 1,000 rupiah for the small ones and 7,000 rupiah for pempek kapal selam.

Fried tofu, tempe, banana, etc.

Here are the foods which are crispy and cheap. My most favourite gorengan (fried snacks) are bakwan and tofu. It costs just 600 rupiah per piece.

Siomay jamur

Siomay is a kind of dim sum. It’s my favourite, too. I like this siomay jamur (mushroom) because it’s got a unique taste. A serving of siomay jamur (4 pieces) is sold for 5,000 rupiah.

Tekwan

Tekwan, is a fish-based food. I usually buy tekwan here. The owner of the stall also sells pempek. A serving of tekwan is sold for 5,000 rupiah only.

Chicken noodles with dumplings

This food is best eaten while it’s raining and cold. In this stall, we can also buy fried noodles, fried dumplings, and fried rice. A bowl of chicken noodles is sold for 8,000 rupiah.

Lamongan fried chicken

Usually my mom and I stop by here when we do not cook something for dinner. The fried chicken is crispy and crunchy. The sambal (chili sauce) is also delicious. Not only fried chicken, we can also order pecel lele (fried catfish plus sambal), fried duck, fried shrimp, fried calamari, and fried fish. Mostly I buy fried chicken. The price of the fried chicken is 9,000 per piece.

Those are the types of food I usually buy. Simple right? Sometimes I also like to buy martabak telur, kwetiaw, or chicken satay. Maybe next time I will try other foods that are sold along the road towards my house.

Wah it’s almost the time to go home. I’ve to get ready. Buy maybe tonight I won’t buy anything to eat because I’m full - I’ve eaten ketoprak this afternoon, hehe…

How to Treat the Itching and Swelling Caused by Caterpillars

Written By Heni Puspita on Thursday, April 14, 2011 | 4:36 PM

Recently residents in some areas in Indonesia are worried because of the caterpillar attacks. Caterpillars are not very dangerous. However, a caterpillar alone can cause itching in our skin, so how if there are hundreds or even thousands of caterpillars in our environment?

There are several methods we can try to treat the itching and swelling cased by caterpillars:

Grate the turmeric and add quick lime (kapur sirih) and water, then heat the mixture over a flame. Once it’s cool, rub it into the skin. This mixture can also be used to treat insect stings.

Source - HERE.

Take some Rimbang (Tekokak/Leunca) fruits, slice them and rub then into the skin. Make sure that the small seeds of Rimbang fruit attached to the skin.

Mix some cooking oil and salt in a small bowl, then smeared into the skin for several minutes. We can also finely chop some onions, and then smeared them into the skin.

Mash a few stems of spinach, squeeze the juice and drink it three times a day.

Clean the skin from the caterpillar’s hair by using paper, gloves, or tape. Wash the skin with warm water and soap. Rub some salt for 5 minutes to remove the hair which still attached. Use VCO (virgin coconut oil) to help treating swelling and pain caused by caterpillars.

To stop the itching and swelling, a thick past of quick lime (Calcium Oxide) can be applied upon the area. In maximum cases, application of quick lime has showed positive results in treating a caterpillar's sting. Baking soda or ice pack can also be applied to reduce the swelling and itching.

Last but not least, do not scratch the skin which is swelling and itching. This can cause wound and infection on the skin. If the traditional methods above do not work, immediately go to the doctor. Hopefully, these caterpillar attacks do not extend to other areas.

If Mothers Were Paid for the Housework They Do Everyday…

Who can afford to pay them? Did you know? If mothers were paid for the work they do everyday, they could buy Porsche 911 Carrera S every month! Believe it or not, Reuters.com states that a survey was conducted to 18,000 mothers in Canada to list their household chores such as cooking, cleaning, taking care of the children and family, etc. A company then described the value, price and salary for the housework of these mothers. The result was very surprising! It turned out that the ‘monthly income’ of a mother would be 125,000 Canadian dollars per month! It equals to 130,000 U.S. dollars, or 80,000 pounds, or 112 billion rupiah. Fantastic! Meanwhile, mothers who works would ‘only’ get 75,000 Canadian dollars plus salary from their workplaces.

Lena Boltos from Salary.com which conducted the survey and made the calculation said, “The common misconception is that being a housewife is easier than working (for example at the office). A housewife is often illustrated as a woman who just stay at home, sit in front of TV watching Oprah and eat snacks.” She added in an interview, “A housewife has got a very big responsibility. Children today have got more hectic life (schedules) than the children in the past. Mother’s really running the home business (mother is really busy).”

Salary calculation was based on ten major works that mothers do at home and the length of time the spent to do their works each day. Calculation of high salary was due to many hours of overtime. Mothers who stay at home reported to make more than 90 hours overtime while mothers who works outside put 54.6 hours overtime.

Well, apparently the housewives could be billionaires. But it my opinion, the housework done by mothers is priceless. No price can value their sincerity and love while doing the job.
